Biography

I am a PhD student in the University of Edinburgh’s School of Engineering, conducting my research within the Institute of Multiscale Thermofluids (IMT). Prior to this, I completed an Integrated Master’s in Mathematics at the University of Edinburgh.

My Master’s dissertation investigated internal ocean waves: how they are generated when large-scale, steady ocean flows pass over rough seabed topography, and how they subsequently dissipate within the water column. Turbulence generated by the breaking (overturning) of these waves is a key pathway for energy dissipation in the ocean, and is therefore of interest for climate modelling. My work used a linearised flow model and developed a non-periodic Green’s matrix approach to compute the resulting wave field.

In my PhD, I am pivoting from ocean dynamics to crowd dynamics, modelling dense crowds as a continuum “thinking fluid”, combining fluid dynamics with ideas from active-matter modelling to capture how collective motion emerges from individual decision-making. The resulting research aims to improve decision support for croud safety, urban planning and event management.
